Ebrahim Desai

Founder, Doctor
Dr Ebrahim Desai, a native of KwaZulu-Natal, graduated from Shandong University and completed his medical internship at King Edward VIII Hospital (Victoria Mxenge Hospital). During his time at King Edward, he was introduced to research by professors from the University of KwaZulu-Natal Medical School, which sparked his realization that clinical trials can profoundly impact the lives of previously underprivileged communities. Dr. Desai then served his community service at the South African National Defence Force, where he played a pivotal role as Director of the COVID-19 office for the KZN region during the pandemic.

In 2021, Dr Desai founded Desmed Clinics, which has rapidly expanded to five clinics, serving approximately 5,000 patients monthly. He further refined his skills as a Sub-Investigator at Synapta Research Centre, contributing to notable studies such as the Celldex inducible urticaria trial and the Spero complicated Urinary Tract Infection study. Dr. Desai is now dedicated to improving the lives of the less fortunate and previously underprivileged populations, driven by his passion for delivering exceptional care and making a meaningful difference.

Mohammed Bassa

Co-Founder, Doctor
Dr Mohammed Bassa, a native of KwaZulu-Natal, graduated from Shandong University and later served as a Medical Intern at RK Khan Hospital and a Community Service Officer at Wentworth Hospital. During his tenure, he became acutely aware of the pressing need to deliver advanced medical care to disadvantaged populations. Dr Bassa then co founded Desmed Clinics which boasts 5 Clinics , he further honed his skills as a Sub-Investigator at Synapta Research Centre, where he contributed to notable studies, including the Celldex inducible urticaria trial and the Spero complicated Urinary Tract Infection study. His passion lies in providing exceptional care to underprivileged communities, driving his commitment to bridging the healthcare gap.

Mohammed Farouk Bhayat

Doctor, PMB
Dr Mohamed Farouk Bhayat, a highly experienced medical practitioner, graduated with his MBBS from the University of Punjab in 1970. He went on to earn a Diploma in Forensic Medicine from UNISA and a Diploma in Occupational Health (with Distinction) from Wits University.

Dr Bhayat established a thriving private practice in Mooi River, where he served the community from 1972 until 2010. In 1973, he made history as the first non-white District Surgeon for all races in the Mooi River district, while simultaneously serving as Medical Officer at the Bruntville Community Centre for nearly four decades.

With extensive clinical experience across general practice, forensic medicine, and occupational health, Dr Bhayat brings a wealth of knowledge to his current role at Desmed Clinics Kwa Cassim in Pietermaritzburg. Driven by his philosophy of patient-centered care, Dr Bhayat believes in treating every patient with the compassion and commitment he would want for himself — ensuring exceptional care for every individual.

Dr Wa-Matamba is a medical graduate from Wits University. She completed her internship at Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital in the Free State and Community service at Thelle Mogerane Regional Hospital in Gauteng. She embodies the essence of compassion and dedication in the medical field. With an unwavering passion for improving the lives of others, she is deeply committed to improving the health of those she serves. Her time at Thelle Mogerane Hospital not only honed her clinical skills but also strengthened her belief in the importance of connecting with people on a personal level. Driven by a desire to make a real difference, Dr Wa-Matamba approaches every patient with empathy, attentiveness, and a relentless pursuit of their well-being. Her enthusiasm for medicine goes beyond the technical aspects; it’s rooted in her belief that healthcare should be accessible, compassionate, and transformative for every individual she encounters.

Jessica Fryer

Doctor, Imbali
Dr Jessica Fryer is a Pietermaritzburg native who graduated from the University of Pretoria where she fostered a love for medicine. During her tenure as a Community Service Office in rural KZN she saw the desperate need for the equalization in the provision of health care and the advancement of medicine. She worked as a Sub Investigator at the Limpopo Clinical Research Initiative where these two goals were being addressed through research. Dr Fryer has worked on a number of COVID-19, Influenza and Respiratory Syncytial Virus related vaccine and treatment studies across all age groups. She has also been involved in HIV treatment and cardiovascular outcome trials. Her passion is in providing world-class care, quality data, and helping to bring a brighter tomorrow.
